Daily Sun staff reports
Storms left large amounts of rain and some hail across southeast Nebraska Wednesday night.
The Beatrice Municipal Airport officially recorded 1.75 inches of rain, although unofficially, several Beatrice residents reported nearly four inches of rain in their gauges. The Beatrice area saw only pea-sized hail for the most part.
Pat Feist, Beatrice Public Works electric superintendent, said an older electric pole at 10th and Oak streets was broken by the wind. No other damage was reported in Beatrice as of Thursday morning.
In Saline County, hail resulted in crop and personal property damage. The area near Tobias experienced dime-sized hail, said BJ Fictum, Saline County Emergency Management director. Fictum said the hail then increased to quarter-size with a few golf-ball sized stones reported just south of Wilber at 5:45 p.m. Some quarter-size hail was also reported in Crete.
A car parked at a residence just south of Wilber reportedly had its rear window shattered by quarter- to golf-ball sized hail.
Fictum said agriculture damage would be assessed on Thursday.
Saline county was involved in two severe thunderstorm warnings, the first issued at 5:22 p.m. for southern Saline County and the second issued at 5:52 p.m. for eastern Saline, northern Gage and southern Lancaster counties.
Fictum said this is the 12th severe storm which has produced agricultural and/or structural damage in Saline County during the 2009 severe weather season.
