Adams Juniors battled Dwight in the finals of the Class C Area 4 American Legion Juniors tournament in Tecumseh Tuesday, but, in the end, couldn’t overcome several defensive errors.
Dwight downed Adams, 8-7, in the tournament final, earning the right to advance to the Class C State tournament at Wisner Friday.
Adams finished its season at 14-5.
“When we lost to these guys (Dwight) the other night, we had nine errors,” Adams coach Josh Rapp said. “Tonight, we lose by one run and close to that many errors again. That hurts.”
Adams had lost to Dwight, 18-8, Saturday in the winner’s bracket final. The team defeated Pawnee City Sunday, 9-8, to get into the championship game.
While the Adams Juniors trailed through the final against Dwight, Rapp said the team didn’t give up.
“These guys haven’t given up on a game all year,” Rapp said. “We’ve had a lot of comebacks.”
Rapp believed if the team kept fighting it had a chance to come back against Dwight, too.
“We just fell a little short,” Rapp said.
Dwight opened the game’s scoring in the first inning, posting the initial run without the benefit of a hit.
The leadoff batter was hit by a pitch, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on an error.
In the third inning, Dwight took a 3-0 lead, scoring two runs as four different Adams players committed four-straight errors.
Adams rallied for two runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Austin Magill walked to lead off, advanced to second on a groundout by Kellen Unvert and took third on a stolen base.
After Austin Ruskamp walked and stole second, both base runners scored as Nick Ruskamp singled to right field.
Dwight answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs, taking a 6-2 lead.
Two singles to start off the inning and then three straight walks, followed by another single allowed Dwight to increase its advantage.
In the top of the fifth, Adams plated two runs.
Andy Buhr walked, took second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a single by Magill.
A single by Unvert scored Buhr and moved Magill to second.
Magill stole third and scored on a groundout by Nick Ruskamp.
Dwight again answered, however, in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on two hits and taking an 8-4 lead.
A rally by Adams in the top of the sixth inning pulled the team within one run, 8-7.
Dylan Schoneweis walked to lead off the inning.
A double by Colin VanGroningen moved Schoneweis to third.
Jimmy Seward doubled, scoring both baserunners.
A single by Magill allowed Seward to score, pulling Adams within one run.
Adams held Dwight scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, retiring the side in order, but was unable to score in the top of the seventh, stranding the game-tying run at second.
Magill led the Adams offense with two singles, while VanGroningen and Seward had a double each and Nick Ruskamp, Unvert and Schoneweis added a basehit each.
VanGroningen took the loss for Adams with Seward seeing action in relief.
