When Jesse Dorn arrived in Okinawa on June 24, 2008, the Wymore native wasn’t thinking about his position as a range coach for the Marines, or even what the weather was like that day on the island.
He was thinking about the combat photographer he just met in the airport ” Margrette “Maggie” Hassler.
Dorn, 22, noticed the 19-year-old Albuquerque, N.M. native almost immediately when he arrived, but only met her briefly in the airport.
Later, he got the opportunity to talk to her.
“We always knew we wanted to get married,” Hassler said.
That “love at first sight” became reality on Friday, as the pair of Marines were married at Wymore Church of Christ.
Dorn planned on proposing to Hassler before May of 2009, but with a surprise trip to Cambodia for Hassler, he had to wait until her return to Okinawa in late May.
Hassler said yes.
The couple arrived in Wymore on June 22.
Hassler said it has been difficult planning a wedding in such a short time, not to mention from the other side of the world.
This was Hassler’s first trip to Wymore. Both her and Jesse met each other’s family for the first time just weeks ago.
Teri Dorn, Jesse’s mother, was thrilled to meet her future daughter-in-law.
“We loved her from the minute he told us. We loved her because he loved her,” Teri said. “She’s just been fabulous. She’s such a sweet girl.”
Dorn said it’s been great meeting Hassler’s parents, too, who came to Wymore from New Mexico and Virginia.
While Dorn wore his Marine dress blues for Friday’s ceremony, Hassler opted to wear a traditional white wedding dress.
On Wednesday, Hassler had her hair in an up-do, practicing for the wedding. Plans that would normally take months were packed into a few weeks for this Marine bride.
Thursday brought all of the ladies in the wedding party to the salon to get their nails done.
“We’re having a hard time having alone time,” Hassler said. “We’re looking forward to that.”
After the wedding, the couple will be stationed one more year in Okinawa.
