Southeast all-stars ready to take court

It will be back to the volleyball and basketball courts this weekend for a number of recently graduated high school athletes as they compete in the annual Southeast Nebraska All-Star games, sponsored by Southeast Community College-Beatrice.

The 19th annual all-star volleyball contest will be held tonight (Friday), beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Southeast’s Truman Center.

Diller-Odell coach Theresa Knabe, assisted by Sterling coach Stan Karr, will lead the East All-Star squad, while Utica-Centennial coach Craig Songster will head up the West team, assisted by Exeter-Milligan coach Darcy White.

Saturday night, the roundballers will take the court for the 21st annual all-star girls and boys basketball games.

Girls action will tip-off at 6 p.m. at the Truman Center with the boys game scheduled to start at 8 p.m.

The East girls team will be coached by Tecumseh-Johnson County Central coach Randy Miller, assisted by Lewiston coach Jay Knaak, while Sutton coach Andy Gerlecz will head up the West team, assisted by Bruning-Davenport coach Doug Otto.

For the boys game, the East will be led by Auburn coach Denny Crawford, assisted by Humboldt Table Rock Steinauer coach Bill Nordloh, while the West team will be led by Hebron-Thayer Central coach Mike Bantam, assisted by Fairbury coach Rick Bell.

For the all-star games, recently graduated seniors are nominated for their respective all-star squads by their high school coaches and are then screened by a committee made of the current all-star coaching staff and previous all-star coaches.

East All-Stars

Justine DeBuhr, Nebraska City, daughter of Randy and Jolene DeBuhr, plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, majoring in elementary education. Her high school coach was Marla Larsen.

Amber Duntz, Diller-Odell, daughter of Kyle and Janice Duntz, plans to attend Doane College-Crete, majoring in exercise science. Her high school coach was Theresa Knabe.
