Lois M. (Hawkins) Whitehead, 91, Beatrice, born March 22, 1917, in Lewiston, Neb., the daughter of Uriah and Dolly (Tays) Hawkins, was called home Dec. 1, 2008.
She graduated from Union Center High School in 1935. She was a homemaker for many years, and in 1970, started working in the housekeeping department at Beatrice Community Hospital, where she worked for over 20 years and later was a Foster Grandparent at the Headstart Program in Beatrice. Lois was united in marriage to Evern V. Whitehead, Aug. 9, 1939, in Fairbury, Neb. She was a member of Christ Community Church, and enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, playing cards with the grandchildren and playing bingo.
Her survivors include sons, Eldon Whitehead and wife Marge of Holmesville, Charles Whitehead and wife Janet of Beatrice, Marvin “Doc” Whitehead and Steven Whitehead, both of Holmesville; daughters, Vicki Roeber and husband Gene of Beatrice and Kris Wilcox and husband Todd of Barneston; grandchildren, Rod Whitehead of San Antonio, Texas, Crystal Haecker and husband Kolin of Lincoln, Neb., Emmie Young and husband Brian of Cortland, Neb., Chase Whitehead of Wichita, Kan., Ashley Wilcox of Grain Valley, Mo., Andra Wilcox of Lincoln, Neb., Logan Roeber and Nash Roeber, both of Beatrice; great-grandchildren, Karlee, Haylee and Rylee Haecker of Lincoln, Neb., Cole and Ashton Young of Cortland, Neb., and Elizabeth Manning of Lincoln, Neb.; brother-in-law, Bill Kirk of Missouri; sister-in-law, Carolyn Whitehead of California; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Evern (1994); son, Richard; daughter, Dorothy; parents: father, Uriah Hawkins; mother and stepfather, Dolly and Carl Caywood; sisters, Maxine Hackbarth and Marjorie Kirk.
Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at Christ Community Church, 2727 Lincoln Blvd., Beatrice, with Pastor Jack Magness officiating. Burial will be in the Church of the Brethren Cemetery, rural Holmesville. A family prayer service will be held at 9:45 a.m. Friday in the fellowship hall of the church. The body will lie in state at Harman-Wright Mortuary of Beatrice from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, with the family greeting relatives and friends from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. Thursday evening. The body will also lie in state at the church one hour preceding the service on Friday. A memorial is established, in lieu of flowers, to the family’s choice.
