Southeast Community College-Beatrice’s Lady Storm saw a 14-point lead dry up in a scoring drought which started late in the first half.

Unable to put points on the scoreboard, the Lady Storm fell to the visiting Doane College junior varsity 77-66 Wednesday at the Truman Center.

Southeast coach Vicki Wooton said it was another “up-and-down” game for the Lady Storm.

“We shouldn’t have lost,” Wooton said. “We need to play our game instead of playing their game.”

The largest lead in the game belonged to Southeast as the Lady Storm took a 34-20 advantage in the first half.

From there, however, the offensive edge belonged to Doane.

Doane pulled within three points at halftime, 38-35, and then outscored the Lady Storm 42-28 in the second half.

“We had some mental mistakes and there was a lack of focus,” Wooton said. “We had too many unforced turnovers.”

Southeast turned the ball over 23 times in the game.

“We’re still learning that the speed limit is 55 because we’re trying to go 70,” Wooton said. “We have to learn what our limitations are.”

Wooton said the Lady Storm were trying to do things they aren’t capable of at this point in the season.

The team needs to get more used to playing together, Wooton said.

“We need to learn who can do what,” Wooton said.

The Lady Storm was outrebounded by Doane 47-38.

Doane’s biggest advantage on the boards was at the offensive end of the court, where the Lady Tigers outrebounded Southeast by 10.

“We just need to get in better position to go after those,” Wooton said. “It’s a matter of standing flatfooted and not being ready.”

Points from the charity stripe was another place where Doane held a distinct advantage.

While Southeast was 80 percent from the line for the game, the Lady Storm shot just five free throws in the contest, hitting four.

Doane finished 11-for-23 from the free-throw line.

Southeast was led in scoring by Ronisha Stennis with 14 points, while Jenny Synowiecki added 12 and Ashley Strickland 10.

Synowiecki’s points were all on three-point goals and all in the first half.

“We quit getting the ball to her,” Wooton said. “We quit attacking and dishing the ball off to the corners.”

Strickland led the Lady Storm on the boards with six rebounds, while Jasmine Archie had a team-high five assists.

Four players — Erica Lundstrom, Jameeiah Coleman, Stennis and Dominick Ausbie — had one steal each.

Sharing the scoring lead for Doane were Firth Norris graduate Vanessa Munter and Morgan Dubas with 17 points each.

Next action for Southeast will be Saturday as the Lady Storm host Union College from Lincoln in a 6 p.m. contest.
