DEWITT -- The Tri County Trojans’ option attack was too much for Wymore Southern’s Raiders, as the Trojans defeated Southern 41-12.

“The big thing was we established our running game. That’s the one thing we needed to do,” Tri County Assistant Coach Delva Smith said.

He said their success in the running game helped open up some passing plays as well.

“I was very impressed with Tri County. They run the option very well,” Southern Coach Kane Hookstra said.

He said the Trojans’ skill in running the option made it a real challenge for the Raiders to defend.

“They’re big up front and disruptive. That made it hard to get things going on offense,” Hookstra said.

The Trojans scored first on a 21 yard run by Jesse Koenig in the first quarter. The PAT failed making it 6-0.

Daniel Barr scored for Southern to tie it up in the quarter on a 48 yard run. The conversion failed making it 6-6.

The Raiders then took the lead in the first quarter on a 67 yard pass from Caleb Bednar to Jared Epp, giving them a 12-6 lead heading into the second quarter.

Tri County scored three times in the second quarter, the first on a 33 yard run. The next came on a 31 yard run by Koenig. Koenig scored the next one on a one yard run, giving the Trojans a 28-12 lead at halftime.

The Trojans scored in the third quarter on a three yard run to make it 34-12.

Talon Matzner scored the final touchdown for Tri County in the third on a  29 yard run.

Smith said along with Koenig, Weston Fanders had an outstanding game at receiver.

“Weston Fanders did a really nice job getting open and catching the ball,” he said.

Hookstra said despite the outcome, he was pleased with his team’s effort.

“I appreciate the kids’ effort. They played hard, they didn’t let up. That’s all I ask, that they work hard and give their best effort,” he said.
