Board of Public Works employees started work last week to replace 12- and 16-inch water mains at Fourth and Grant streets, said BPW Water Superintendent Steve Kelley.
The work is moving more slowly than expected, Kelley said, but the goal is to finish before Labor Day.
Public Works is expected to open bids Wednesday to repair and replace the portion of the street that was heavily damaged when the water main broke June 27, Kelley said.
The mains are more than 70 years old, and the Beatrice City Council and Board of Public Works approved replacing those on Grant Street between Second and Fourth streets to prevent future breaks.
This area has had four major breaks within the past 20 years, Kelley said. The 16-inch water main broke near the south pump house, affecting the north water tower, and much of the city north of Court Street to the Gage County Industrial Park lost water pressure, Kelley said.
The estimated cost of $150,000 will be paid for through BPW cash reserves.
