OMAHA - A winning effort for Beatrice’s Cory Sugden in the Class B boys high jump Friday at the Nebraska State High School Track and Field Championships in Omaha turned into an All-Class Gold Medal performance by the end of the day.

Sugden won the Class B high jump with a winning jump of 6-7 and then withstood efforts by Class A and C jumpers to take away the all-class gold Friday afternoon.

“Cory jumped very well,” Beatrice assistant coach Jim Weeks said. “He had two great days of practice getting ready for the state meet.”

Weeks said Sugden didn’t miss a jump until he made a school-record attempt after already winning Class B.

Sugden attempted 6-9 3/4, which would have given him to the Beatrice school record, but failed on three attempts.

The Beatrice record is held by Randy DeBuhr, a 1980 graduate, at 6-9 1/2.

The 6-7 jump is a personal best for Sugden, whose previous best was 6-6 at an indoor meet at Doane College earlier this season, Weeks said.

“Cory really competed,” Weeks said. “He was never close to missing until 6-9 3/4 and he had one really good attempt at that.”

Weeks said Sugden is a “technican” when it comes to the high jump and works hard at the event.

Beatrice’s Tommie Bardsley also had a personal-best in the high jump Friday, finishing sixth overall at 6-4.

Bardsley also competed in the triple jump Friday, but failed to place with a best effort of 42-4 1/4.
