Dorothy M. (Whitehill) Turner, a long-time resident of Firth, Nebraska, passed away at Holmes Lake Manor in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Sunday, May 11, 2008, at the age of 98. Mrs. Turner was born on August 19, 1909, in Farragut, Iowa.

She was one of nine siblings born to John William Whitehill and Anna May (Hood) Whitehill. She attended high school in Shenandoah, Iowa, graduating in 1929. She was married to Isaac Miles Turner on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1930. They lived in Shenandoah for 16 years, where they worked for K.I. Miller Hatcheries in Shenandoah and in Omaha. They moved to Firth, Nebraska, in 1946, where they owned and operated the Firth Hatchery & Seed Company for 25 years. Mrs. Turner also worked as a clerk in the Firth Post Office for several years before being appointed the postmaster on September 1, 1964. She continued to serve as postmaster until she retired in 1979. Mrs. Turner was active in the community, where she was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary 295, Merry Mixers Extension Club, and a member of Evangelical Free Church.

She is survived by 32 nephews and nieces, and many other family and friends. Preceding her in death were her husband, Isaac Miles Turner; her parents; 4 brothers and 4 sisters, Lee Whitehill, George Whitehill, Mabel (Whitehill) Ross, Irene (Whitehill) Ayers, W.H. (Jeff) Whitehill, Ruth (Whitehill) Chasey, Delbert Whitehill, and Edna (Whitehill) Smith.

Funeral service: 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at the Evangelical Free Church of Firth, 101 E. Third St., Firth. Visitation: 5 p.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, with family greeting friends from 5 p.m.-6 p.m. at Metcalf Funeral Home in Firth, 309 Nemaha St. Memorials to the family for future designation.
