Verva L. Martin, age 98 years, of Wymore, died Thursday evening, May 1, 2008, at the Sunrise Country Manor in Milford. She was born May 24, 1909, on a farm near Burchard and she was a 1926 graduate of Burchard High School.
She later graduated from business school in Lincoln. She married Morris L. “Jack” Martin on Dec. 15, 1951, in Los Angeles, Calif. She had been employed by various government agencies as a secretary, and took pride in her efficiency and accuracy. Her final employment was at the Homestead National Monument near Beatrice. They moved to Wymore from Burchard in 1964. She was a member of the Burchard United Methodist Church and attended the Blue Springs United Methodist Church. She was a former member of Fern Chapter 96, O.E.S. at Burchard, and received her 50-year membership pin from Violet Chapter 105, O.E.S. at Wymore. Her hobbies included making ceramics, especially Christmas trees, flowers and gardening, and her hats.
Verva is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Arthur and Marie B. (Mary Borden) Peacock; by her husband, Morris “Jack” Martin, on Oct. 15, 1987; by two brothers, Ralph and Charles; and by two sisters and their husbands, Dorothy and Howard Barrett and Eva and Edgar Van Boening.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2008, at the Burchard Cemetery, the Rev. John Henderson officiating. Eastern Star service will be conducted by Violet Chapter 105. Closed casket visitation will be at the Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home, 505 North Ninth Street, Wymore, from 12:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be directed to donor’s choice. Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home, Wymore, is in charge of arrangements.
