Norma L. (Remmers) Hiatt

Norma L. (Remmers) Hiatt, 80, of Beatrice, died at the Parkview Center in Beatrice on Friday, May 2, 2008. She was born October 11, 1927, at DeWitt and graduated from DeWitt High School.

She worked as a receptionist in a doctor’s office in Beatrice before her marriage to Edward A. Remmers on June 20, 1948, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of rural DeWitt. After Edward’s death in 1961, she married William K. Hiatt on February 15, 1969, at St. John Lutheran Church of Beatrice. She was a former member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (Soap Creek) of rural DeWitt, and was currently a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Beatrice, where she had belonged to the Ruth Circle and had been a Sunday School teacher.

Survivors include one daughter, Diane Courtney and husband Ron of rural Beatrice; two sons, David Remmers and wife Carol of rural DeWitt and Duane Remmers and wife Barbara of Lincoln; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, LaVerna Niemeyer of Beatrice; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ervin and Loraine Remmers of Orange, California; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, August and Helena Pohlmann Deeke; her first husband, Edward Remmers, who died on August 27, 1961; her second husband, William Hiatt, who died on October 2, 1990; an infant sister; and one sister, Adelia Bauman.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at St. John Lutheran Church, Sixth and Washington streets, Beatrice, with Pastor David Kramer and Pastor Joann Kramer officiating. Burial will be in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery of rural DeWitt. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday in the chapel of the church. A memorial has been established to the family’s choice with Harlan and Kathryn Overbeck in charge. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice from 8 a.m. Sunday until 9 p.m. Monday and then on Tuesday at the church one hour preceding the services.
