The willingness of Beatrice Middle School students to report a suspicious device brought into the building headed off further incident on Thursday morning, school officials said.
Beatrice Public Schools Superintendent Dale Kruse said at 8:30 a.m. Thursday BMS administrators were informed that a middle school student had a suspicious device in the building.
Following the reports provided by other BMS students, administrators and law enforcement immediately brought the student into the office and confiscated the device, which has been passed on to the Nebraska State Patrol for evaluation.
“From the students involved there was firework type of stuff in the device,” Kruse said, although exactly what the device is will be determined by the state patrol.
Classes for other BMS students went on as usual, he said.
Kruse said he couldn’t reveal what disciplinary action had been taken with the student.
“We don’t comment on disciplinary actions with students,” he said.
Kruse said the fact that other students saw something suspicious and reported it to BMS staff is a reflection on the good character of students at BMS.
“We stress Character Counts!, one pillar of that is being a good citizen,” he said.
Kruse said BMS students showed that Thursday in reporting the suspicious device.
