Husker, Sooner game ends in tie

LINCOLN - Nebraska’s Mitch Abeita homered and Dan Johnston hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning for an 8-8 tie, and that’s how the Cornhuskers’ game against Oklahoma ended Sunday because of the Sooners’ travel schedule.

The Cornhuskers (17-3-1, 5-0-1) squandered a 6-3 lead in the top of the ninth, ending their five-game unbeaten streak in conference games.

The Sooners (17-7-1, 0-2-1) loaded the bases against Erik Anderson, who came on in relief of Zach Herr at the start of the inning. Spencer Selby’s two-run single chased Anderson, and Aaron Baker greeted Mike Nesseth with a three-run homer for an 8-6 OU lead.

OU had runners on second and third with one out in the 10th, but Nesseth got Trey Sperring to pop out and struck out J.T. Wise.

Jake McCarter gave up a walk but nothing else to Nebraska in the bottom of the 10th.

Baker was 4-for-5 with four RBIs and Selby 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Sooners.

Abeita, in addition to his sixth home run, had two singles for the Huskers. Bryce Nimmo was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

The teams agreed to not start an inning after 4:30 p.m. because the Sooners had to bus to Kansas City, Mo., to catch a flight.

It was the fourth tie in a game between Big 12 teams since the conference started play in baseball in 1997.
