Changes to Athletic Park could cost more than $6 million

The price tag for updating facilities at Athletic Park would be between $6 million and $7 million, Beatrice Public Schools Superintendent Dale Kruse told the BPS Board of Education during the board’s Monday meeting.

He said the question of what could be done with Athletic Park has been a topic of discussion in recent years.

“This fall we asked an architect to have a look at that,” Kruse said.

He said putting in an eight-lane track with a football/soccer field inside would wipe out the maintenance shed and require moving the retaining wall on the west side of that area.

The football field and track would also be further north from where it is currently located, meaning additional bleachers would need to be installed, Kruse said.

He said the total estimated cost to get all that done would be between $6 million and $7 million.

In other business:

High school marquee: Approved, 8-0, the installation of a new marquee at the high school. The total cost to install the new marquee and remove the old one is expected to be $34,769.

State aid: Learned that the district’s state aid for next school year will increase by $1.18 million.

Award: Learned the district received a CHIP Award for outstanding contributions to the program that gives parents a chance to have fingerprinting and other identification information collected on their child.

Collective bargaining: Board voted 8-0 to recognize the Beatrice Education Association as the bargaining agent for certified staff.

Lets get something done. That facility is a joke. The worst in class B. Our kids, coaches and fans deserve better.

Yea, lets go, we need a new firestation, a new jail and a track....heck lets have more stuff....I want to reach the goal of paying more taxes I have ever paid in this ghost town. I hope they have thought how they are going to increase wages in this town so we can afford to pay those taxes...

I also wish to spend more of my hard-earned money on something else that can cost us taxpayers millions of dollars. Who won the lottery in this town to suggest so many items for the townspeople? So, not only are we having our BPW bills increased, again, but the gas continues to climb, plus the heating fuels, oh and the basic needs for our survival. So why not, 2.5 million here, and 6-7 million here and while were at it, how about we put 5 lanes of traffic through the downtown area. That way NOBODY will shop down there because they'll be too afraid to walk around and be struck by the 5 lanes of traffic. "Ghost-town," that is where Beatrice is headed people. Look around town and see how many empty buildings there are. I don't see people flocking to Beatrice. Let's stick to the basics, like a jail, then law enforcement/fire-dept. and then go from there. Unless there are some of these businesses, who are better off then most, who are willing to contribute to all of these bonds?Yeah Right!

I couldn't agree more Mike! Athletic Park is a joke, I had to come to Beatrice 25 years ago to play and it was a joke then. But I don't think the answer is to dump money into Athletic Park. There are just too many negatives to this site. No parking being at the top of the list. We need to build a new stadium next to the High School. This should have been done when the school was built, but you know Beatrice, most things are done halfway because of all the negitive people. I don't blame the people who planned them they were just trying to get support from the community so they tried to keep the cost down. (examples would be the gym at the high school, and the water park) It will cost twice as much now as it would have when the school was built.

I understand the need for better facilities and support that(as long as educational priorities are met first!), but almost $35,000 for a marquee?

Why does the board agree to pay this kind of money for a Marquee when we already have a marquee? Its hard to suppport their Big bond issues, when I see my tax money spent like this. I also know my tax money is spent by this board, on much more silly things like the ridiculous renovations that were shabbily done in some of the elementary schools last year. The board voted not to use those companies again, now that the damage is done. Can we trust these 8 people to make decisions for our children with our money? I hope Beatrice voters are watching how these eight people operate, and make appropriate changes next time you vote.

The elected officials in this community including city, county and school board had better get a dose of reality. The economy is soft, gas prices are high and people do not need to be taxed more. Please pay attention to what these people are doing.

Yep, same story different year. I'll bet if we would look back over the years the same type people were saying the same thing. "the economy isn't good, it's not a good time to spend that kind of money" and so on and on and on. Is there ever a good time? I'm a home owner and no I really don't enjoy having my taxes raised. I'm also a person that believes that it is our responsibility not to pass our problems onto our children. So if it means that I'll have to pay more taxes I'll gladly do it to help our community and save our children from having to inherit our responsibilities.
Just how long did it take to pass the bond issue for the new high school? How much more did we have to spend since we had to wait so many years?

wow. so many changes to a place that holds a lot of memories. but my question is...when the bond issue passed, wasn't it in the plans to move athletic park out by the high school anyway? i thought it was...what happened here? and what is wrong with the current marquee board? not high tech enough? so let's waste more tax money and update something that will be outdated in a few months anyway. and why not put this all up for a vote. i agree with everyone who thinks we should. after all, it isn't the school or nsaa paying for these changes. it is the tax payers. come on now...duh!
