All-star volleyball squads to battle Friday

Standout volleyball players from the area will take the court Friday as Southeast Community College-Beatrice hosts its 17th annual all-star volleyball game.

Action will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Truman Center on the SCC-Beatrice Campus, with the East All-Stars taking on the West.

Each year, some of the top area players are selected to compete in the all-star games.

Recently graduated seniors are nominated for their respective all-star squads by their high school coaches and are then screened by a committee made of the current all-star coaching staff and previous all-star coaches.

Head coaches for this year's all-star squads are Daykin Meridian's Linda Johnson, who will coach the West team assisted by Bruning-Davenport's Kelly Frank, and Humboldt Table Rock Steinauer's Kara Engels, who will coach the East team assisted by Nebraska City Lourdes' Michelle Kreifels.

Once nominated players are screened, they are sent invitations to participate in the event.

Schools, which can be represented on the all-star team, lie inside an area with boundaries of U.S. Highway 81 to the west, Nebraska Highway 2 and 6 to the north, the Missouri River to the east and the Nebraska-Kansas border to the south.

More than 80 schools in all were invited to nominate players.

Along with the volleyball contest, girls and boys basketball games will be held at 6 and 8 p.m. Saturday, respectively.

Jessica Stauffer, Humboldt Table Rock Steinauer, daughter of Larry and Kathy Stauffer, plans to attend Southeast Community College and major in early childhood development. Her high school coach was Kara Engles.

Laura Thames, Humboldt Table Rock Steinauer, daughter of Charlie and Sherri Thames, plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and major in nutrition, exercise and health science. Her high school coach was Kara Engles.

Whitney Hippen, Lewiston, daughter of Kent and Yvette Hippen, plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Kearney and major in athletic training. Her high school coach was Scott Anderson.

Kala Holmes, Lourdes, daughter of Loren and Elizabeth Holmes, plans to attend Bellevue University and major in business. Her high school coach was Michelle Kreifels.

Liz Bieker, Falls City Sacred Heart, daughter of Kent and Sue Bieker, plans to attend Benedictine College and major in pre-physical therapy. Her high school coach was Lori Harring.

Lauren Burbach, Firth Norris, daughter of Steve and Rhonda Burbach, plans to attend Missouri Western and major in journalism. Her high school coach was Christina Boesiger.
