AUBURN - Pawnee City's Indians and Adams Freeman's Lady Falcons won championships Saturday at the Pioneer Conference track and field meet in Auburn.
The Indians ran away with the boys crown, outdistancing runner-up Falls City Sacred Heart, 143 1/2-106, while Freeman edged the Pawnee City Lady Indians, 95-86.
Highlighting the Indians' efforts at the conference meet was Bryan Austin's performance in the high jump.
Austin won the event with a leap of 6-5 1/4, breaking the previous conference record of 6-3, which was set by Eric Schmidtz in 1996.
Other gold-meal performances for the Indians included Dallas Schilling, who went 12-4 in the pole vault; Tyler Derby, who jumped 41-7 in the triple jump; and the 400-meter relay team, which won in 46.1.
Humboldt Table Rock-Steinauer's Michael Volker was a double gold medalist for the Titans, winning the shot put with a put of 40-0 1/2 and the discus with a throw of 146-4.
Other first-place performances for Sunland athletes in the boys division included Marshall Freeman of HTRS, who won the long jump with a leap of 20-3 1/4; Tanner Sharpe of HTRS, who won the 800-meter run in 2:07.3; Matt Usher of HTRS, who won the 300-meter hurdles in 42.4; and Philipp Hoening of Diller-Odell, who won the 1600-meter run in 4:56.5.
Freeman's Lady Falcons won four events en route to their championship.
Katie Schoen won the 100-meter hurdles for Freeman in 16.6, while Kelsey Schuster won the 200-meter dash in 27.7 and Denae Wolken won the 800-meter run in 2:28.1.
Freeman also won the 400-meter relay in 53.8.
Pawnee City's efforts were highlighted by Alicia Marteney's conference record-setting performance in the 3200-meter run, which she won in 11:45.2. Marteney broke her own conference record of 12:15.3, which she set in 2005.
Marteney also won the 1600-meter run in 5:41.2 and ran a let on Pawnee City's winning 3200-meter relay.
The relay team won its event in 10:26.1.
Pawnee City also won the 1600-meter relay in 4:23.1.
Other first-place performances for the Lady Indians included Brooke Burgess, who won the pole vault with a vault of 8-4, and Heather Blecha, who won the 300-meter hurdles in 50.5.
Also earning gold medals among Sunland performers in the girls division were Maggie Kramer of Lewiston, who won the long jump with a jump of 15-7 1/2; Paige Schmid of HTRS, who won the triple jump with a jump of 33-10; and Ranay Tennant of Diller-Odell, who won the 100-meter dash in 13.1.
