Beatrice Educational Foundation presents scholarships

The Beatrice Educational Foundation recognized 17 Beatrice High School seniors as recipients of $63,300 in scholarships at a noon gathering Tuesday at the Hevelone Center for Performing Arts.

Frances Fellwock Reed Scholarships

Two $10,000 Frances Fellwock Reed Scholarships were awarded. Recipients were Matthew Lauritsen and Katlin Karges. Alternate was Julianne Jensby.

Lauritsen, son of Gene and Patti Lauritsen, will attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, majoring in education.

Karges, daughter of Kelly and Cindy Karges, will attend American University, preparing for a career as a law professor.

Jensby, daughter of Jeff and Lorraine Jensby, will attend Kansas State University, planning a career as a medical doctor.

The Frances Fellwock Reed Scholarship provides $2,500 per year toward the recipient's four-year degree. The recipient must maintain a cumulative B average to retain the award.

Fred and Virginia Vette Scholarships

The foundation awarded five $6,000 Fred and Virginia Vette Scholarships. Recipients were Jenna Busboom, Dane Fossler, Rachel Hasenkamp, Jensby and Erin Sorensen. Alternate was Alan John Wiese.

Busboom, is the daughter of Michael and Doreen Busboom and plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, with a planned major in the health field.

Fossler, son of John and Lorri Fossler, will attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, majoring in business.

Hasenkamp, daughter of Terry and Venita Hasenkamp, is planning to attend Benedictine College, majoring in secondary English education.

Sorensen, daughter of Jay and Stephanie Sorensen, is planning to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, majoring in pharmacy.

Wiese, son of Alan and Sheryl Wiese, is planning to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, majoring in mechanized systems management.

Applicants for the Vette scholarships must be of high moral character and rank in the upper 25 percent of their graduating class. The scholarships were made in memory of Mrs. Vette's late husband, Fred Vette, and in honor of Virginia V. Vette.

Klaus Dueck Scholarship

Kelsey Luers is the recipient of the $2,500 Klaus Dueck Scholarship.

Luers, daughter of Barrie and Ann Luers, is a sophomore at Northwest Missouri State University, majoring in accounting.

The Klaus Dueck Scholarship is for BHS students wishing to study in a foreign country. This scholarship is available to both students currently attending BHS and BHS graduates currently attending college. Selection is based upon academic achievement, good citizenship and involvement in school and community activities.

Robert Taylor Scholarship

Natasha Trauernicht is the recipient of the $2,500 Robert Taylor Scholarship.

Trauernicht, daughter of Rodney Trauernicht and Tamara Trauernicht, will attend Creighton University, majoring in pediatrics.

The Robert Taylor Scholarship is available to a BHS student planning to pursue a career in fine arts, communications, language arts, journalism, music and theatre. Secondary priorities include those interested in an education degree, followed by those pursuing careers in health care and medicine. Students must rank among the top 50 percent of the graduating class with participation in community activities and good citizenship.

Fitzwater Honors Scholarship

Wiese is the recipient of the $2,000 Fitzwater Honors Scholarship.

The Fitzwater Honors Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who will pursue a health and/or science field of study. Selection is also based on academic achievement, ACT/SAT scores, good citizenship, moral character and involvement in extracurricular and community activities.

Peter W. Jepsen Scholarships

Three $1,500 Jepsen Scholarships were awarded. Recipients are Krista Eis, Annette Lytle and Krista Zarybnicky.

Eis, daughter of Tom and Rhonda Eis, plans to attend Nebraska Wesleyan University, majoring in biology.

Lytle, daughter of Tom and Anita Lytle, is going to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, planning a career as a zookeeper.

Zarybnicky, daughter of John and Patty Zarybnicky, plans to attend Wayne State College, majoring in pre-medicine.

The Jepsen Scholarship is for students planning to attend either a four-year or two-year school.

Don Linn Scholarship

Lindsey Keyes is the recipient of the Don Linn Scholarship, a $700 scholarship.

Keyes, daughter of Gary and Deb Keyes, will be a student at Nebraska Wesleyan University, majoring in business and accounting.

The scholarship is awarded based on scholastic ability and financial need.

Harold R. Deitemeyer Scholarship

Brent Menke is the recipient of the Harold R. Deitemeyer Scholarship for $500.

Menke, son of Steve and Wendy Menke, will go to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, majoring in sports marketing.

The Deitemeyer Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, has demonstrated active participation in school, community and volunteer activities, and is planning to attend the University of Nebraska.

Diane Cornelius Scholarship

Chandler Rickers is the recipient of the Diane Cornelius Scholarship for $500.

Rickers, son of David and Debbie Rickers, will attend an, as yet, undetermined college, majoring in vocal performance.

The Diane Cornelius Scholarship is available to a graduating senior who participated in music, was active in both school and community activities and whose GPA is in the top 50 percent of their graduating class. The scholarship is for students wishing to pursue a career in a music-related field.

Leatha Grimes Scholarship

Erin Fullmer is the recipient of the Leatha Grimes Scholarship for $100.

Fullmer, daughter of Paul and Anne Fullmer, will attend Wayne State College, majoring in nursing.

The Leatha Grimes Scholarship is a one-time scholarship being awarded to a student planning to pursue a career in nursing.

Beatrice Educational Foundation student members Nicole Schlake and Michael Fox were recognized during the ceremony.

The Beatrice Educational Foundation was formed in December 1987 to support and encourage activities that enhance and strengthen the educational opportunities for all students in Beatrice Public Schools.
