A little determination helped carry the Beatrice Orangemen soccer team to an overtime victory over visiting Nebraska City Tuesday.

Beatrice defeated the Pioneers, 5-4, after ending regulation play tied at 4-all.

The Orangemen weren't going to let Nebraska City, or a little wet weather, stop them from defending their home field.

“The kids pulled it together,” Beatrice coach Pam Henning said. “I knew the seniors didn't want to lose a game on their home field and they really rose to the occasion.”

Henning said the Orangemen struggled defensively in the first half.

Senior Donavon Winters was the one who “held” things together for the Orangemen early, Henning said.

“He (Winters) was playing both sides and the mid and doing an awesome job,” Henning said.

Henning said Beatrice's players may have underestimated the Pioneers.

“Nebraska City is a tough team,” Henning said. “I don't think our boys had it in their minds that Nebraska City was going to be that tough.”

Henning said the Pioneers were fast and well-disciplined.

“They (Nebraska City) played well,” Henning said. “It was a tough game for us.”

Henning said the Orangemen need to see “every single team” they play as a competitive opponent.

When the game went into overtime, Henning said she was confident the Orangemen could pull out the win.

Logan Wrightsman scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give Beatrice the victory.

Henning said Wrightsman played well throughout the game.

When Wrightsman broke away for what would be the game-wining goal, Henning said one of his teammates predicted the score.

“It was pouring down rain and I had an umbrella over my head, but I could hear somebody behind me kept saying, ‘Cash money in the bank. Cash money in the bank. I've seen this play before.'”

That “somebody” was Orangemen reserve Nick Bell.

“Nick knew Logan was going to make that goal about 10 seconds before he ever the shot,” Henning said.

Nebraska City scored the game's first goal less than nine minutes into the contest.

Henning said Beatrice has been “fighting” having to play from behind in nearly ever game this season.

“We come on the field and we're just always a little lax,” Henning said. “We have some focusing problems at times.”

It didn't take the Orangemen long to respond, however.

Less than two minutes later Williams Torres put the ball into the goal for Beatrice, tying the score at 1-all.

Two minutes after that, Beatrice led 2-1 as Tyler Sand scored for the Orangemen.

The Pioneers, however, proved they weren't finished, scoring two more goals in the first half and taking a 3-2 halftime lead.

In the second half, Mac Henning retied the game at 3-all, scoring just less than six minutes in.

Nebraska City again responded, scoring on a penalty kick to take a 4-3 lead.

But Beatrice was again able to answer.

Sand scored his second goal of the game with 9:28 left in regulation, tying the score at 4-all. It was the fourth time in the contest the teams had been deadlocked.

Beatrice was able to keep Nebraska City from scoring during the remainder of regulation, sending the game into overtime, which consists of two 10-minute periods in high school soccer.

The Orangemen finished with 26 shots on goal in the game, while Nebraska City had 19.

In goal for Beatrice, Taylor Lang was credited with six saves.

Next action for the Orangemen, 4-1, will be Friday at Omaha Roncalli.
