Lady Storm thumps Brown Mackie

SALINA, Kan. - Southeast Community College-Beatrice's Lady Storm split two games over the weekend.

The Lady Storm won Sunday at Brown Mackie in Salina, Kan. by a score of 71-37, and lost Saturday at Hesston College in Hesston, Kan., 62-59.

After losing on Saturday to Hesston, Southeast coach Vicki Wooton said the Lady Storm played better as a team against Brown Mackie on Sunday.

“We came out strong in the first half,” Wooton said, “and had trouble in the second half.”

Southeast thundered out with a 40-13 first half lead against their hosts.

In the second half, Southeast outpaced their opponents 31-24.

The Lady Storm had four players in double figures in the game.

Jennie Mitchell and LaNora Washington led Southeast with 12 points apiece. Mitchell led with five assists.

Mariah Sekutera added 11 and Michelle Fujan had 10.

Michele Messaga led in rebounding with eight boards and added nine points.

Charmaine Ferguson pulled down six boards and had seven points.

In the Hesston game, SCC coach Wooton said it was a tough game on the road for the Lady Storm.

Hesston won the game, 62-59.

“We struggled in the first half,” Wooton said. “We had too many turnovers and were outhustled.”

Wooton said Southeast couldn't really recover from an eight-point halftime deficit.

Hesston jumped out to a 33-25 halftime lead.

“We came out in the second half and played a little better,” Wooton said.

The Lady Storm outpaced Hesston in the second half, 34-29.

Wooton said Southeast needs to improve.

“Our defense needs to improve,” Wooton said, “if we are going to make it out of our region.”

Three players scored in double figures for Southeast.

LaNora Washington and Charmaine Ferguson each had a game-high 13 points, Jennie Mitchell added 12.

Michele Messaga led the Lady Storm with 10 rebounds and three blocks, and contributed nine points.

Ferguson led with six assists and four steals.

With the weekend split, Southeast's Lady Storm's season record is 14-11.

The Lady Storm's next action is Wednesday against Hamilton College at Lincoln Lutheran at 9 p.m.
