SALINA, Kan. - Over the weekend, Southeast Community College-Beatrice's Mens Storm split two Kansas road games.
On Sunday, Brown Mackie downed Southeast, 82-52, and on Saturday, Southeast hung on to stop Hesston College, 90-87.
Southeast coach Joel Wooton said the Storm played two tough games over the weekend.
“It is tough to play two back-to-back tough games,” Wooton said, “especially this time of the year when we're already banged up.”
Wooton said Southeast played very well in the first half against a physical Brown Mackie.
“We probably played the best first half we've played all year in a very physical game,” Wooton said.
Southeast outscored Brown Mackie in the first half, 32-30.
Wooton said the game got more physical in the second half, and the Storm suffered shooting woes.
“We ran out of gas in the second half as the game became even more physical,” he said.
“We just couldn't hit a shot, including going 9-for-22 from the free throw line in the second half,” Wooton said.
In the second half, Brown Mackie upended Southeast, 52-20.
The Storm was only 5-of-29 from the floor in the second half, and in the game, was a cool 19-of-72.
Only one Storm player scored in double-figures in the game. Richard Marion led the team with 10 points.
Brandon Jimerson led Southeast with five assists and three steals.
In the rebounding department, Jay Duncan led Southeast with nine boards and Tim Ondrak added eight.
In Saturday's game with Hesston College, Brandon Jimerson led the way for Southeast as the Storm held on to earn a 90-87 win.
Jimerson had a game-high 32 points for Southeast, and was 7-of-11 on three-pointers.
Coach Wooton said Southeast played it's best offensive game of the year.
“After falling behind (Hesston) 14-4, the Storm rallied back behind the great shooting if Brandon Jimerson and excellent ball movement,” Wooton said.
Southeast held a 53-51 lead at the conclusion of the first half.
Wooton said the Storm pulled away from Brown Mackie in the second half, but had to hang on near the end.
“We jumped out to a 13-point lead in the second half,” he said, “but had to hang on for the 90-87 win.”
Southeast outpaced their hosts in the second half, 37-36.
Wooton said it got tough the last five minutes as Hesston “lived at the free throw line.”
“The guys really were patient offensively and set good screens and really got great looks at the basket,” Wooton said.
Also scoring in double-figures for the Storm were Richard Marion and Jace Fredenburg with 14 points each.
Tim Ondrak had a game-high nine rebounds for Southeast. Marion led with six assists.
