PAWNEE CITY - When Pawnee City senior Samantha Musil sets her sights on a goal, she doesn't let anything stop her from working to achieve it.
Musil set a new Class D state record in the discus Tuesday at the Lewiston Invitational, which was held at Pawnee City, with a throw of 157-2.
The previous Class D state record was held by Clarks' Molly Jo Brown, who threw the discus 151-4 at the state track meet in 1993, setting both the state and state meet marks.
The all-class all-time state record in the discus is held by Wilber-Clatonia's Melanie Uher, who set the mark at 185-4 in 2002.
Musil said she set her sights on breaking the Class D state record already was a freshman.
Musil's record-breaking effort came on her first preliminary throw Tuesday.
From the moment she released the discus, Musil said she knew she had a good throw, but she really didn't realize just how good.
“I haven't been blocking well with my hip and I did it this time,” Musil said. “My form really felt better.”
Musil said she's not good at judging distances, however, and didn't realize she'd let go of a state record.
“I was surprised when they read off the distance,” Musil said.
With her name in the record book, Musil achieved one goal, but that doesn't mean she's satisfied.
“I want to keep trying to break my personal record,” Musil said. “I'd like to keep throwing this distance consistently.”
Musil said she wouldn't mind moving the state mark a little higher.
Musil also wants to defend her state discus title.
The Pawnee City senior has won the past two Class D State discus crowns, capturing the title her sophomore year with a throw of 139-11 and her junior year with a throw of 137-1.
Musil was second at state as a freshman with a throw of 125-5.
But this year, Musil not only wants to win the Class D State title, but she also wants the all-class gold medal.
Last year's state meet gold medal winner was Bellevue East's Jasmine Mosley, who won with a throw of 145-5.
Between now and the state meet, Musil said she has a number of things she can work on to try and improve her throwing technique.
“I have a lot of stuff to work on,” Musil said. “I'll keep working.”
While Musil doesn't have a lot of competition from others at area meets this season, her Tuesday effort was nearly 57 feet further than the second-place finisher, she does compete each time out.
“I compete with myself,” Musil said. “I work to break my personal records and to do better than I've done before.
“I don't think about what other people are throwing.”
Pawnee City coach Alan Strong has no doubt Musil will be able to achieve additional goals this season, but he was especially pleased to see Tuesday's performance.
“Breaking the state record has been one of Sam's goals for several years,” Strong said.
Perfect throwing conditions Tuesday, as well as all other factors, seemed to be in Musil's favor, Strong added.
“She's been resting up a little and the discus was the first event today, which allowed her to concentrate on that,” Strong said.
Strong said Musil has been throwing well in practice lately and he believed the state record would fall soon.
“Every day she's been throwing a little better,” Strong said.
Musil is a very hard worker and a perfectionist, Strong said.
“Sam makes sure whatever she does, she does it well,” Strong said. “She's worked hart to get to this point.”
While he was “excited” for Musil Tuesday, Strong knows the senior still has other goals in mind.
“She's got a lot of high expectations,” Strong said.
Musil also won the shot put at Tuesday's meet with a 45-0 put.
Also claiming a field event win from the Sunland were Adams Freeman's Katie Schoen, who won the high jump.
First-place winners on the track from the Sunland in the girls division Tuesday included Freeman's Kelsey Schuster, who won the 200-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles; Freeman's Megan Milke, who won the 400-meter dash; Freeman's Denae Wolken, who won the 800-meter run; Pawnee City's Alicia Marteney, who won the 1600-meter run; and Freeman's 400-meter relay team, which won its event.
Falls City Sacred Heart won the girls team championship with 122 points, while Freeman was second with 118.
In the boys division, Pawnee City claimed the boys team title with 145 1/2 points, while Sacred Heart was second with 118 1/2.
The Indians' effort was led by Tyler Derby, who won both the long jump and triple jump.
Pawnee City's Nick Rogers won both the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs and Alex Wood won the pole vault.
The Indians also claimed a win in the boys 400-meter relay.
Other Sunland event winners for the boys included Lewiston's Ryan Thomas, who won the 200-meter dash and high jump; Diller-Odell's Matt Harre, who won the shot put; and Humboldt/Table Rock-Steinauer's Michael Volker, who won the discus.
